MHCC's independent student voice, sharing stories that matter to our community.
The Advocate news team is a vibrant community of passionate and dedicated students at Mt. Hood Community College who care about journalism, creativity, and connecting with the people around us. Join us to experience journalism firsthand, tell meaningful stories, and help shape our campus and community.
Since 1966, The Advocate has been bringing stories, ideas, and perspectives to MHCC students and the surrounding community. Today, that work continues to be recognized across Oregon. In 2026, The Advocate was named the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) Collegiate General Excellence winner for Group 3 and brought home more awards than any other publication in its group.
If you're interested in getting involved, the best part is that no experience is required!
We simply love to create, and we welcome current MHCC students of all backgrounds, interests, and experience levels.
The Advocate is a place to gain real, hands-on experience while building your portfolio and résumé. Whether you’re interested in writing, photography, video, design, social media, advertising, or another creative field, you’ll have opportunities to work on real projects, meet deadlines, collaborate with a team, and create published work you can take with you beyond college. You can explore your interests, develop new skills, take on leadership opportunities, and build a body of work that can help you pursue internships, jobs, transfer opportunities, and future creative or professional careers.
Whether you can contribute 30 minutes a week or want to become a regular member of the staff, there’s a place for you here.
You can stop by the newsroom on Tuesday or Wednesday between 11am and 3pm, or anytime our door is open!
We look forward to hearing from you!
