OREGON’S BIRTHDAY IS HERE AND THERE’S A LOT TO CELEBRATE
The celebration of Oregon’s birthday. Photo by Bethy Fallgren| The Advocate While many people are out buying chocolates, professing their love for one another or instead simply not giving a hoot about Valentine’s Day, some of us are out celebrating something else. In the Pacific Northwest, people are surrounded by lush landscapes, amazing cities, and roads that lead to endless possibilities. What better day to spend enjoying these things than on this love-centered holiday – w

TOSS YOUR COIN TO ‘THE WITCHER’
“The Witcher” is a current Netflix streaming series that has gone through many forms of media and has become a very popular series, no matter the medium. This was originally a book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. It grew very popular in Poland and made its way to America. Since then, a bunch of comics, television shows, video games, and tabletop RPGs have been based on his work. The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia and his journeys around the continent that is simpl

SINGLE PRINGLE’S GUIDE TO VALENTINE’S DAY
Eli Rankin|The Advocate As the resident single guy of The Advocate newspaper and broadcast team, I’ve never really liked Valentine’s Day. A day for romance, love, and hanging out with your significant other doesn’t really provide a good environment for someone who doesn’t actually have a significant other. Fear not, ladies and gentlemen who are in the same boat as me: I have come up with a list for what to do on the loneliest day in the year for many of us 45.2% Americans in

FORBIDDEN LOVE FOR THE 100TH TIME
Parrish Chang|The Advocate “A plague on both your houses!” At this point, the tragic love shared between two young adults from rival houses has been so thoroughly referenced and repeated throughout Western literary discourse that most of us know the general plot by osmosis alone. But while there is not very much left to discover anew regarding William Shakespeare’s original play, it does not mean there isn’t still value in the tale. While we understand now that Shakespeare h

THE LACKLUSTER, BLOCKBUSTER OSCARS
While the Oscars have never been the most entertaining of awards ceremonies to behold, the 92nd Academy Awards show on Sunday will at least go down in history for its historical Best Picture nomination. For the first time in the Academy’s history, the award for Best Picture was given to a foreign language film. More specifically, director Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” was presented with the award. But the accolades don’t stop there: Parasite ended up taking home four Oscars, out

SOUTHWESTERN CULTURE THROUGH A NATIVE LENS
‘Spirit Cage’ by Nathan Orosco made of bronze, glass, and metal. Chloe Collins|The Advocate Selected works of Nathan Orosco, MHCC instructor of sculpture and drawing, are on display in the Visual Arts Gallery and highlight the romanticism and misrepresentation of Native Americans. Orosco’s works in “Fences in the Horizon” focus on the balance between the end of the western cowboy “free range” mentality and the “manifest destiny” push of settlers that impacted Native Americans

GORILLAZ ARE BACK WITH A NEW SINGLE
The world’s most successful virtual band, Gorillaz, is back and moving into the new decade with a brand new single, “Momentary Bliss” – and the title seems appropriate. Finally returning to action in 2017 after a six-year hiatus, Gorillaz seem to be back in full force, having released an album roughly every year since. And now, as of Jan. 28, a new project titled “Song Machine” has been announced via the band’s social media, along with a short introductory track and an accomp

‘JUST MERCY’ LEAVES POWERFUL IMPACT
Web Photo I remember watching the trailer of the movie “Just Mercy” and instantly wanting to see it. At first glance, it looked like a really powerful and impactful movie. It’s a drama, based on a true story that outlines the life of lawyer Bryan Stevenson, who fights for the rights of innocent African Americans who are wrongly convicted of crimes and facing death row. The movie portrays Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan) as a noble and strong individual who doesn’t give

‘CIRCLES’: MAC MILLER’S FAREWELL GIFT
Two years after his death by overdose in 2018, acclaimed artist Mac Miller’s unreleased last project, “Circles,” has finally been released. To say the anticipation was great is quite the understatement. It has been understood for some time now that Circles would, at last, continue Miller’s project-spanning vision that began with the release of “Swimming,” his fifth studio album, which debuted just over a month before his untimely passing – the idea being a multiple-part music

‘THE GENTLEMEN’ DEALS WITH THE DEVIL’S LETTUCE
It’s 2020, and everyone’s favorite Tarentino wannabe is back at it with yet another action-comedy, crime-thriller film. Presumably tired of working on live-action Disney remakes and questionable retellings of popular children’s stories, Guy Ritchie has returned to retread on his favorite stomping grounds with his latest movie, “The Gentlemen.” Of course, if Ritchie’s previous cockney crime films are anything to go by, you can be sure the men in this movie are anything but gen

SELENA GOMEZ ALBUM ‘RARE’ TREAT
Web Graphic Selena Gomez kicked off the new year right and has made her comeback in 2020 with her newest album, called, “Rare,” released on Jan. 10. She also got a new tattoo below her right ear that says, “Rare,” matching exactly of the font of the new album. I remember Gomez from years ago, watching her on “Barney and Friends,” and obviously I grew up with her on the Disney Channel. I’ve always loved her acting and music, and just her as a person. She seems so down to eart

Founded on Jan. 10, 1920, after the Paris Peace Conference that ended the first world war, the LoN’s objective was to focus on disarmament and prevent future wars across the globe. Although the organization lasted only 26 years until the founding of the United Nations after World War II, the LoN set up

GAMES, GOOGLE AND FAILED ASPIRATIONS
Along with the new decade comes not only a whole new generation of video game consoles, but the first real glimpses into the “future” of gaming. At the tail end of 2019, Google officially released to the world its premium video game streaming service, Google Stadia, which was swiftly met with mediocre reviews from audiences and users alike. While initial interest in the streaming platform was positive, due to the poorly handled release of the service and the apparent imperfec

WORD SPREADS ABOUT ‘GOD OF MOTHER’
A puzzling statement to read, and one just as puzzling to hear – to most Americans, an idea fairly abstract. For this is not a concept elaborated upon or even mentioned by practically any other Christian denomination. None, except one. Across the greater Portland area, and reported all across the country now, people yell and throw up the phrase on colored signs. The three words, printed on glossy pamphlets. The statement has even reached the MHCC campus. With several encount

ROMANCE WRITERS OF AMERICA CALL FOR INCLUSION
The Romance Authors of America seem to have decided to follow the plot of “Romeo and Juliet.” That is to say, self-destruction. Once upon a time, romance author Courtney Milan read a book. This book was called “Somewhere Lies the Moon” by Kathryn Lynn Davis. Milan, who is Chinese-American (and sat on the RAA board of directors), was not a fan. In fact, she was so upset by what she called “a racist mess” that she publicly called Davis out for it. Courtney Milan | Web Photo Dur
