BYLETH HOUSES FAN BACKLASH
Super Smash Bros. is a video game series that has been going for a little over 21 years. With five games in the installment, each new game added new characters for players to use. However, the most recent added character has sparked some huge backlash within the Smash community. On Jan. 16 there was a Super Smash Bros. announcement for the fifth and final character of the first DLC fighter’s pass. This character was the main player character from the “Fire Emblem Three Houses

ROMANCE WRITERS OF AMERICA CALL FOR INCLUSION
The Romance Authors of America seem to have decided to follow the plot of “Romeo and Juliet.” That is to say, self-destruction. Once upon a time, romance author Courtney Milan read a book. This book was called “Somewhere Lies the Moon” by Kathryn Lynn Davis. Milan, who is Chinese-American (and sat on the RAA board of directors), was not a fan. In fact, she was so upset by what she called “a racist mess” that she publicly called Davis out for it. Courtney Milan | Web Photo Dur

CHESS GRANDMASTER BOBBY FISCHER
Some people consider chess to be the sport of intellectuals and as such there are only a few figures as famous as the legendary Bobby Fischer. Fischer is best known as one of history’s greatest chess players and America’s only world chess champion since FIDE (International Chess Federation) tournaments was established in 1948 as the ultimate measure of talent. Born in Chicago in 1943, Fischer was introduced to chess at 6 years old and was noted for having an intense interest

GERVAIS GOES OUT WITH A ‘GOLDEN’ BANG
With so many award shows and seemingly pointless self-congratulatory ceremonies, you would be forgiven for forgetting about the Golden Globe Award show, staged again on Jan. 5. However, the 77th Golden Globes will be going down in history as one of the most entertaining award shows of the last decade, all thanks to comedian Ricky Gervais, host for the event. It is no secret that Gervais is a funny man, but unlike many comedians who are asked to host ceremonies such as the Osc

CABELLO DROPS DIVERSE ALBUM
I’ve always loved Camila Cabello as an artist. I started listening to her music and learning more about her after the release of her song “Havana” in 2017. I love and continue to enjoy her debut record, as I like the Hispanic and unique vibes that she incorporated into this album, which she also continues to do in her latest music. After almost two years since her debut album release in January 2018, the release of her sophomore album “Romance” took place just last month, on

AN ART EXHIBIT THAT FEELS LIKE HOME
There’s a tangible sense of place in Carolyn Hazel Drake’s installation, “In This Small Corner Of The Atmosphere,” currently displayed in MHCC’s Visual Arts Gallery. Drake creates this through a series of prints, textiles, collages, and other mixed media. The colors, textures, and even the titles of her pieces communicate a feeling of being in the Pacific Northwest. “Same weight of Shadow” Photos by Maysee Thao | The Advocate Being a third-generation Oregonian, it’s no wonder

MOVIES OF THE YEAR: FROM WW1 HORROR TO HOLLYWOOD
The year 2019 has officially ended, but as we emerge in a new decade of cinema we must first look back to the incredible films that have defined what it means to be a critical success in the final year of the 2010s. While few of the films listed here are likely to be Best Picture winners, the movies in our Top Five lineup are simply too big or too impactful to be ignored by the general movie-going audience. 5. “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” Quentin Tarentino returned to the

SANTA CLAUS: MAN, NOT A MYTH
There is a common myth that fairy tale figures like the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and The Sandman are fictional characters in folklore and have no relevance in real life. The most famous perpetual example of this is Santa Claus, also often considered a fictional character. However, the truth remains that Santa Claus portrayed as a myth and not a real person with magical powers is an incredibly false and incorrect statement about the immortal humanitarian who breaks into

‘ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE’: A CHRISTMAS ZOMBIE MUSICAL
I have seen many a movie during my 20 years of life, yet I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a “Christmas zombie musical.” Yet this is what I found over the last weekend while browsing Hulu. “Anna and the Apocalypse” is a movie about a group of teens who are just trying to survive high school when the apocalypse strikes – this one featuring zombies. In the beginning, Anna has a lot to deal with: a father who doesn’t want her to follow her dreams, a best friend who’s in love with h

‘MIDWAY’ A FIERY LETDOWN
With a movie based on the historical World War II events that happened June 4-7, 1942, it’s not hard to say I expected a lot going into this movie. But that’s the problem with movies today: You can’t go in with high expectations, because those hopes will get thrown to the wolves. “Midway”: What can I say? With a budget of $59.5 million and an all-star cast that includes Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, and Nick Jonas, to name a few, and a run time of 2 hours and 1

HOLLY-DAYS WITH THE ADVOCATE: a few anecdotes to get you into the spirit
Christmas is always a special time for me, as it is for most everyone else. Maybe more so, even. My birthday is the day after Christmas, my sister’s birthday is Dec. 30; and my little brother’s birthday is Dec. 17. That means we all get the pleasure of celebrating our birthdays on the same day… not the most fun thing for a kid growing up, but Christmas time was always a time of celebration. I’m glad that I’ve actually learned that Christmas isn’t about the presents, but abo

The person who wakes you up is this somewhat crazy looking scientist named Phineas Welles. You soon learn that the board wants to catch Phineas,

MUSIC MAKES A DIFFERENCE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
When you look up the definition of the word “homage,” you will most likely get homage means “great respect and honor, or something done to honor a person or thing.” Web Photo And we as people often celebrate almost everything and anything such as birthdays, accomplishments, weddings, etc., we also celebrate music: We rate it, play it, share it and worship it – especially if it’s our favorite artist or even just a single song we get stuck in our heads on an endless loop, a cat

STAR WARS FANS REJOICE: THE MANDALORIAN IS HERE
Disney Plus is finally available for all to purchase and along with the release of this new streaming service comes the Disney Plus exclusive, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian.” And the show seems worth the wait. As a general rule, the Star Wars property is a license to print money, but just because it’s profitable doesn’t mean it’s an indicator of quality, as the Star Wars fanbase is ever so eager to point out. Most fans, and even critics, have had very mixed opinions of the new
