This November, the Mt. Hood students voted Peyton Hull in as our new student body president. I am very excited to have her serve our student community here at MHCC. She always strives to do her best. Last year at Mt. Hood she completed the two-year program for Integrated Media: Video, while at the same time being heavily involved with the theatre program here.Hull is a standout student and very passionate. A Trip Down ‘Coraline’ Lane
Photography by Cortlan Souders It was a beautiful, cloudy day outside the Portland Arts Museum when I encountered a spectacular artifact: a large sculpture of the mystifying and elusive cat from the movie “Coraline,” painted with large yellow flowers across its body. I was intrigued to find more information about this beautiful sculpture, so I looked into the matter and dove into a life-altering portal. I found from the Travel Portland-sponsored event called “Coraline’s Curi

‘The Substance’ Makes Liam’s List!
After being kicked off her TV network by Harvey (Dennis Quaid), a cartoonishly evil and misogynistic network executive, Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) takes a black-market drug with cell-replicating capabilities to create a younger, better, version of herself in Coralie Fargeat’s new movie, “The Substance.” In our Botox, Ozempic, and Brazilian Butt Lift day and age, it was only a matter of time before a movie like The Substance came out. As an exercise in disturbing practical

“Danger Tourist” Released from Taliban Custody
Photo of Miles Routledge On Oct. 10, notorious danger tourist “Lord” Miles Routledge was released by the Taliban after being held for 8 months in Afghanistan – actually one of the tamer of the many adventures he has been on. Among Miles’s other adventures have been climbing to the top of Brazil’s Snake Island, illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, sneaking through the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site, becoming a movie star in Uganda, and there’s so much more. But “Lord Mi

Associated Student Government of MHCC News
For the first time since the campus was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Associated Student Government of Mt Hood Community College (ASMHCC) can proudly say it has both a student body president and vice president working together! During the tumultuous three years post-COVID outbreak, the group has had one or the other in office – but not both. Now Javier Estrada and Emily Phoun, elected by fellow students last spring, will represent the student body this 2023-24 a

EDUCATOR SHOUTOUT
Most everyone knows about Mt. Hood’s end-of-the-year awards for deserving instructors and other staff members, but not all deserving educators get chosen. So, I want to give a shout-out to Sarah Aimone, who helped me through my first term in college in the winter. This educator was amazing in guiding me through all the questions I had and comforting me while I was going through things that were rough during that time. I know Sarah has helped so many other students besides me.

EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF WILDLIFE AT POWELL BUTTE
Did you know that East Portland has its very own birdwatching hotspot? Powell Butte Nature Park, located just off Southeast Powell Boulevard and accessible by foot, car, or public transit, is one of East Portland and Gresham’s best birdwatching areas. Over 150 separate species have been observed there, with the extinct cinder cone volcano and its slopes offering many different kinds of nature, from forests to grasslands. This biodiversity, spread out over about 600 acres, con

MARINE ANIMALS FACE EXTINCTION
“Conservation is the preservation of life on Earth, and that, above all else, is worth fighting for.” – Rob Stewart, documentary filmmaker/author. “If you think the ocean isn’t important, imagine the Earth without it. Mars comes to mind. No ocean, no life support system.” – Dr. Sylvia Earle, American oceanographer. You might be asking about the meaning of Rob Stewarts’s quote, what could be the message he wants us to understand: The significance is to help conserve the life o

MEDIA MELTDOWN SPELLS CHANGES (OR NOT)
From Fox News to CNN, scandals are plaguing the world of cable news recently. Dominion settled its $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit with Fox News for $787.5 million, and shortly after, host Tucker Carlson was ousted from Fox. On the very same day, “CNN This Morning” anchor Don Lemon also was let go. This may represent a pivotal point in the land of cable news and a turn towards more factual reporting – or just another scandalous week dotting the history of cable media. Here I’

SPORTS UPDATE
SOFTBALL On Tuesday, May 2, the Saints welcomed the No. 1 softball team in the Southern Region of the Northwest Athletic Conference, the Lakers of Southwestern Oregon Community College. After being swept in Coos Bay, including a 1-0 heartbreaker in 10 innings, Mt. Hood was looking for vengeance and to keep rolling – especially after a walk-off win against Lower Columbia. The Saints would not get that vengeance in Game 1, being shut out 4-0, but they released all their energy

BASEBALL RECAP
The Saints baseball team played against Chemeketa Community College last Wednesday, May 3, and got off to a slow start. Mt. Hood got one run in the bottom of the first inning, but there was a little controversy next time the Saints took the field: Chemeketa’s dugout was claiming a balk should’ve been called that wasn’t. The umpires came together, but nothing changed except for the fact that afterward they lost track of the ball-strike count on the batter at the plate (it was

The Face of Downtown Portland on the Weekend
Portland Saturday Market It would seem we are finally seeing the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, which we have endured for the longest two years of our lives. As I walk through the neighborhoods and communities in and around Portland, I am becoming increasingly hopeful that our time with COVID is coming to an end – a gradual end, but an end, nonetheless. I see the cherry blossoms bursting to life as our spring has come upon us, serving as hope that we are finally ge

The Responsible Stoner
On my 21st birthday in 2019, I bought a sativa joint with the strain name of Bruce Banner. Being 21, this gave me a whole range of possibilities for where my experience with marijuana would lead me. Since then, I feel like marijuana has been a great addition to my life, even though it is not something I would recommend to everyone. In these two years, I went from only doing marijuana once in a while, to doing it every day for a while, then to doing it no more than three time
