Pieless and Penniless
Shari’s Shutters its Doors for Good Will Oregonians ever recover from losing their beloved Shari’s? The Beaverton-headquartered restaurant chain officially and abruptly closed all of its Oregon locations on Oct. 21, leaving regular customers and employees at a loss. That includes the Gresham outlet on Northeast Burnside Road, at the Oregon Trail Center shopping center. The downfall of the largest family diner chain in the PNW began even before the COVID-19 pandemic. According

Ethan’s Adventure
Photo by Ethan Oliver Kumoricon: Have you heard of it? What about anime or manga? Does Naruto or Dragon Ball Z ring any bells? What about Ponyo or Your Name? Simply put, anime and manga are the Japanese version of cartoons and comics. And maybe you’ve seen a mass of people together in amazing costumes, at one time or another, in Portland. What were they doing? They were probably at a convention celebrating something they enjoy. After visiting Kumoricon again this year – held

King Tide Draws Tourism and Trouble
Photo by Laramie Oedell If you live near any kind of water, be it a small creek or the Columbia River, you will find the water level rises in the winter. Many things affect this, mainly heavy rains, or snow melting from the hills, causing the water to run into surrounding streams. For the ocean, the tides also just change year-round, due to the moon’s gravitational pull on the sea. During winter, when the moon is closer to the earth in our Northern Hemisphere, the tides beco

Basketball is Coming
Women’s Basketball Preview The MHCC women’s basketball season has started off swiftly: The team has a handful of games under its belt so far, while its first Northwest Athletic Conference league game is still roughly a month away, on Jan. 4 at home against Umpqua Community College. Saints team captains – sophomores Savanah Burke, a forward, and Laci Pentzer, a guard, and freshman center Joselyn Scammell – all had positive things to say about the young season. Asked how they f

MUSHROOM HUNTING SEASON: Point-and-Shoot
HURRAY! It’s one of my favorite times of year! HUNTING SEASON IS OPEN! All photos by S. Cousins Technically, this hunting season is always open, but the prizes are often hiding underground until fall, and then again in spring. I love arming myself and heading out to shoot some of these beauties. All I need is my phone, or some other camera, and a desire to hunt and search for the elusive darlings of the fungal world. I’ve been hunting this way for years, and I feel the callin

MHCC OFFERS WELCOME AUTONOMY TO VETS
One vet’s perspective on the college experience at Mt. Hood and the cultural differences It is almost hard to write a point-of-view article as a military veteran. Every veteran has their own unique experience, just like every person. I have had hardships and trauma. I am sure there are students here that have gone through their own individual events and analogous parallels. Someone’s worst day is their worst day. Some of us couldn’t name a worst day, because we have had a few

I SCREAM YOU SCREAM WE ALL SCREAM: ASBESTOS
MHCC has had asbestos since the ’60s; waiting to receive funds to remove it Often, when people hear the word “asbestos,” panic soon ensues. The same can be said for words such as lead, mold and other serious concerns regarding public health and safety. As it turns out, the MHCC campus carries some of these risks.Substances like these were commonly used a lot between the 1940s and 1970s. Cheap, easily accessible, flame-retardant, and good at insulating sound and temperature, a

TAKE YOUR TURKEY AND SHOVE IT
When you celebrate thanksgiving, the fascists win. Abandon tradition – Observe First Christmas instead. Fuck Thanksgiving! What a stupid holiday. Y’all have access to the internet. By now I’m sure you’re aware of what a smug twisting of history it is to celebrate genocide; if not, you probably got other stuff to unpack so I’ll save my breath on that topic. Putting all that aside, it’s still such a mediocre holiday. Turkey sucks. It’s never cooked right and it’s always so dry.

Seasonal Study Strategies
BALANCING SCHOOLWORK WITH HOLIDAY FUN CAN BE CHALLENGING, BUT WITH THE RIGHT STRATEGIES, YOU CAN ENJOY THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. As we enter November and December, many of us look forward to the holiday season with excitement. It’s a time for family gatherings, decorations, relaxation, and, of course, gifts. But while the holidays can bring joy, they can also be distracting. Between planning for celebrations, spending time with loved ones, and preparing for the new year, it’s

Cross Country Goes For Distance
Photo by Jeff Hinds It’s been a while, but the Saints cross country men’s team has MHCC back in the running in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC). Head coach Fernando Fantroy hasn’t been able to field a full squad for competitions since before COVID hit – it takes five runners for a team to record a qualifying score in NWAC events – until this fall. The year 2019 “was the last strong team we had,” said Fantroy, who also is head coach of the Saints track and field team.

Stone Soup: A Savory Production
If you ever enjoyed the story of a hungry vagabond uniting a small village over a pot of stone soup, this play is for you. Alisha Christiansen teaches children in grades 3 through 8. Several years ago, she had written a “Stone Soup” play for her students. But it wasn’t until early summer of this year when the Theatre Department at MHCC was deciding what subject to develop that her mini-play would become a full-fledged production – with a final College Theatre showing at 10:30

Inside ‘The Memo’: A Glimpse Behind The Absurdist Comedy
As the holiday season approaches, the MHCC Theatre Department is wrapping up preparations for an engaging production of “The Memo,” an absurdist comedy by Václav Havel that critiques bureaucracy, communication, and the craziness of corporate life. This play is not only a satire about the challenges of a fictional language called Ptydepe, but also a sharp commentary on how bureaucracy can dehumanize people – written by Havel, a dissident, poet and playwright who became preside

CHROMAKOPIA: ALBUM REVIEW
Tyler sticks to the realm of previous albums like “Igor” and Call Me with heavily layered synths, bombastic trumpets, and piano ballads, but brings such enthusiastic variety with each song that it’s hard to not allow earworms to etch into you. Ilustration by Cortlan Souders Riding on the success of his album “Call Me If You Get Lost” from 2021, and running a victory lap after an extended version was released in 2023, Tyler The Creator has yet again dropped a surprise album –

Career Fair: Mediocre to Fair
MHCC’S RECENT FAIR LEFT OUR COLUMNIST WONDERING: WERE STUDENTS THERE FOR THE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES OR THE FREE VEGETABLE TRAYS? I went to the MHCC Career Fair on Oct. 30. I have to say, the community was nice, and the stands themselves were very inviting. I saw the employer representatives answering many questions from people who seemed genuinely interested. But I wondered if some attendees were just there for the goodies and snacks, rather than actually seeking a job. It made

unleashing the artist
When you look up the definition of “intuitive,” you get an answer that refers to someone who can understand things with little evidence or proof. The word “spunky” calls to someone being high-spirited and brave. Photograph by S.Cousins When you meet Serena Bowman, she is the embodiment of both elements, but cranked to 11. An eclectic artist with a bubbly presence and kindred spirit, she is truly someone you must meet here at MHCC. Serena says her inspiration is driven by the

Cost of Eating leaves us hungry
Inflation in the restaurant industry …What’s really going on here? Inflation is a hot topic across the nation, especially with the looming U.S. presidential election, and it seems that the food industry has been hit especially hard, piggy-backed on the near-dissolution of the restaurant industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the USDA Economic Research Service the “average annual food-at-home prices were 5 percent higher in 2023 than in 2022. For context, the 20-y

Finally, violent femmes live
When it comes down to live shows, there are few bands that can match the energy and charismatic presence of the Violent Femmes. Their music has resonated through generations, dating from the early 1980s. Gordon Gano’s distinctive, offbeat lyrics and the band’s punk/folk/ indie rock sound sets them apart from many bands of their time. As I grew up, the Violent Femmes played an integral part during the better part of my adolescence. I remember coming home from school when my p

Community colleges are attractors of people who are in transition, people dreaming of a new life. Sharing these dreams can help inspire others in our community in ways that they may never have expected. Perhaps the knowledge that someone is embracing courage gives ano
