Mt. Hood Student Body President and Vice President Announced
On May 8, Student Life leaders announced the winners of the student body election of president and vice president for the student government (Associated Students of Mt. Hood Community College) for the 2024-2025 school year. The event was sparsely attended, and held little drama since Alessandra Dante Sciarratta was the lone candidate for president, and Ty Brintnall the lone contender for vice president. In all, 306 total votes were counted in the elections, a turnout rate of

Showcasing Student Talent at Visual Arts Exhibit
Inspiring artwork from many Mt. Hood students are on exhibit in the Visual Arts Theater through the end of May, showcasing an entire school year of creations by the student body of the MHCC Visual Arts Department. Several awards were announced at a formal artist reception, held on May 9. They were presented by Mt. Hood sculpture instructor/adviser Nathan Orosco for the winning works selected by Portland ceramic artist Nora Brodnicki, this year’s exhibition juror. Categories i

Jojo’s Slipups a Potential PR Stunt
Jojo Siwa, of Nickelodeon and “Dance Moms” fame, recently started out on what appears to be the least successful “All press is good press” PR campaign I’ve ever seen. Jojo blew up on TikTok in 2021 after publicly coming out in a video dancing to the song “Born this Way” by Lady Gaga, and opened up about her relationship with a woman named “Kylie Pru.” The pair would split later that year and eventually get back together, but Jojo would continue to gain popularity on the app f

The History of Sports at MHCC
College athletics are a major way for students to hone their skills and compete against comparable talent while obtaining an education. Athletes come from all over the West Coast to play at Mt. Hood Community College. But it wasn’t always like this, especially when junior colleges were not organized into conferences or leagues like we see today. MHCC’s athletics program really started in 1968-69, two years after the college was built. This was when Clackamas, Lane, Mt. Hood,

‘The First Omen’ Prequel of ’70s Film
There’s nothing that stirs up controversy and division among film fans and critics alike quite like films centered around sacrilege and demonic possession. “The Omen” was one of those late ’70s films that served as a predecessor to the 1980s’ so-called “Satanic Panic.” A great film for its time, it still holds a solid 85% rating on RottenTomatoes.com. Conversely, the three sequels that followed the original all received terrible ratings (as is common with a lot of popular hor

Navigating the Fashion Flux
Image sourced from umlconnector.com The modern trend cycle is unconventional today, running at unprecedented speeds and cannibalizing itself to produce more and more. SHEIN, Zara, Forever 21, etc: Each brand has been pumping out new clothing styles en masse, in some cases having 100-plus new garments listed each day in an effort to appease the ever-fickle internet fashionistas, and to try and take a slice of the newest micro-trend before it collapses and is reabsorbed into so

‘Falsettos’ Musical Making a Broadway Revival
Illustrations by Devin Singh “Falsettos” is a musical introduced to the world in 1992 that saw a very successful Broadway revival in 2016, which is what I’ll focus on. This Tony Award-nominated performance with its small cast of seven stands out with Christian Borle and Andrew Rannells starring. There are 34 unique songs in the two-act play, which runs two hours and 30 minutes. The Broadway run with this cast closed in January 2017, but thankfully there are two live recording

Meet Mt. Hood Baseball Team Captain Isaiah Chacon
Coming off a double header sweep of Chemeketa Community College on April 24, The Advocate caught up with the Saints’ baseball team captain, sophomore catcher/outfielder Isaiah Chacon, who wears No. 8. We learned about his early life in Texas, what the Mt. Hood team means to him, and more. In 32 games played this season as of April 30, Chacon is batting .262 with 115 at-bats – but got hot in April, batting .326 for the month. That’s much improved from the .190 batting average

Sports Facilities Available to Students
Photos from MHCC You don’t have to be on one of Mt. Hood Community College’s intercollegiate sports teams to be physically active on the Gresham campus. MHCC offers many opportunities to be physically active, and many of them are free to students. From our popular 25- and 50-meter swim pools to our widely unknown racquetball courts, there is something for everyone. Mt. Hood’s Physical Education (PE) facilities stand separate from the main Academic Center. From the main classr

Bella Carazo: Saints Pitcher Extraordinaire
Mt. Hood Community College has an awesome softball pitcher this year, in freshman Bella Carazo, who covers first base for the Saints when she’s not pitching. Carazo grew up in Bonney Lake, Washington, not far from Tacoma. This is her first year playing in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) and she is already making standout performances for her team, tied for first place in the South division entering the last two weeks of the season. Carazo won NWAC “pitcher of the wee

Theatre Production ‘Everybody’ Opening Friday, May 10
The theatre department here at Mt. Hood is gearing up for another Spring Term performance, “Everybody,” opening Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m. In anticipation, I chatted with a couple of the actors in the play about what makes this show a special treat. They explained that Everybody is a play that welcomes the energy of chaos into the fiber of the performance. There are several roles, shared between 16 actors (including understudies). There is a lottery process that happens each ni

Opinion: The Recriminalization of Drugs is Essential
Image sourced from opb.org In November 2020, Oregon voters approved Ballot Measure 110, which decriminalized the unlawful possession of small amounts of controlled substances in an effort to direct police to more useful pursuits and to break the stigma of those suffering from substance addiction. The aim was to provide counseling and health services for addicts, instead of punishing them for a disease they have. This measure looked incredible on paper, but unfortunately, the

‘Halo 2’: A Perfect Sequel 20 Years Later
Near the end of 2024 (Nov. 9, to be exact), the most-beloved sequel of a genre-defining launch title from the original Xbox will be 20 years old: “Halo 2.” Released to a resounding success and gaining tons of praise from tons of gaming journalists and critics, Halo 2 hits the nail on the head of what a sequel to any piece of media should do. Even though development of the game was a very difficult and tedious task, it ended up being worth it and deserving of its glory. The Ha

Biden’s Pitch to the Nation
On March 7, President Joe Biden gave his 2024 State of The Union Address to Congress. In his speech he sought to contrast between himself against former President Trump and the Democratic Party he leads while also making a case for how his agenda has improved the lives of Americans. Biden’s address was very similar to his 2023 version, emphasizing many of the same points. Both speeches featured issues such as democracy at home and abroad, the federal government’s budget defic

Strong Season for Mt. Hood Softball
Photos by Andrew Hull The Mt. Hood softball team is having an exceptionally good season – again. Defending Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) champions in 2022, the Saints were knocked off in the first round of the 2023 championship tournament. They’re determined this year to come back much stronger, and have done just that. The team started its regular season with a four-game win streak, and hasn’t let up. Through April 17, the Saints have racked up 17 wins and 3 losses in
