SHAPING THE MHCC EXPERIENCE

WHAT IT TAKES TO LEAD AT MT. HOOD COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Leadership is more than a position of power. The ASMHCC representatives make thoughtful decisions for the student body so that students may walk peacefully through campus every day. While members come from different walks of life and have individual goals, they choose to stand together to serve the community.

That process did not happen overnight. Members work toward it every day, learning from one another and discovering new ways to serve.

“[Leadership] is thinking about ways to create more meaningful connections between students across campus,” said Dave Shirer, student leadership and engagement coordinator, in an interview with the Advocate. “Sometimes it’s trying something and failing miserably or trying something and seeing it was a success.”

Joining leadership gives students the opportunity to represent their community. Most decisions happen behind the scenes, yet they significantly influence students’ daily lives. Students may have noticed placards around campus that say “brought to you by ASMHCC.” The group’s actions range from providing recycling bins in each building to making executive decisions that protect student safety.

SELECTION PROCESS

ASMHCC is currently looking for members for the 2026-27 academic year. While the group is a space for students with leadership experience to thrive, previous involvement is not necessary.

Presidents-elect Liana Navarro and Aubree Kennell hold interviews for leadership positions alongside Shirer and Abio Ayeliya, MHCC’s director of student life. Current student representatives typically reapply for the following year but are not guaranteed a spot.

“You will never see someone in the same position twice in a row,” said Nick Stone, ASMHCC’s financial affairs representative, when asked if he would reapply. “Every person has as much chance to be chosen for the role as me.”

LEADERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

During an interview, Shirer discussed the qualities the council searches for when evaluating candidates.

“We mainly look for students that have a strong willingness to serve the students and advocate for their needs,” Shirer said.

The emphasis remains on supporting the student body’s best interests and diversifying the council. Key responsibilities for members include:

Attending regular meetings: This includes discussing current assignments during weekly ASMHCC meetings.

TRAINING

Taking leadership classes and group training during the summer to build team connections and conflict-resolution skills.

SERVICE HOURS

Dedicating 10 office hours and serving one hour in Barney’s Pantry per week. These requirements are subject to change by the ASMHCC president or advisors.

ACADEMICS

Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA. This requirement reflects flexibility for students and aligns with the school’s minimum standard.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

ASMHCC provides printed sheets detailing each position and its responsibilities. These can be requested at the Student Union front desk.
