The Advocate

MHCC’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is taking Shakespeare to new heights—literally—as actors lift the classic comedy off the stage with use of aerial choreography.

The Advocate had the opportunity to speak with MHCC’s aerial director and choreographer, Andee Fischer, who shared insight into the process behind both dance and aerial work for the actors participating in the upcoming production. What makes this play stand out is how A Midsummer Night’s Dream incorporates aerial choreography. It is the first performance at MHCC to do so, making it a must-see for anyone who loves Shakespeare.

Actors can’t simply jump into using aerial equipment without completing a series of stretches and conditioning exercises. Grip strength, body control, shape-making, and spins are all emphasized, along with integrating dance elements to keep the production true to the Elizabethan period in which Shakespeare wrote Midsummer. Although aerial work is used, it stays at a lower height rather than extreme elevations.

To maintain period-correct dance styles, performers focus on traditional ballet with a mix of floor work and Irish-inspired set movements.

As for apparatuses used in the production, three will appear throughout the show: fabrics and silks, a lyra, and slings—also known as aerial hammocks. They can support a considerable amount of weight, meaning anyone can participate in aerial dance.

With all this high-flying choreography, safety is crucial. A typical rehearsal includes positioning and setting up safety equipment, with technicians and actors moving 8‑inch‑deep, 6‑by‑6‑foot crash pads, blocking scenes, and practicing routines. The harnesses use certified climbing‑grade hardware with auto‑lock carabiners rated for 25 kilonewtons, supporting a minimum to maximum weight range of 5,000 to 15,000 pounds.
