Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and you don’t have to break the bank or go far to have an awesome time. Whether you’re spending it with a partner, friends, or even enjoying a solo treat, there are some great spots right near MHCC where you can make the day memorable.

I’ve got you covered with ice cream, food spots, and fun activities that are perfect for students like us. Here’s a fun and easy guide to some of the best places to check out in Gresham and Portland!

Frenzi Ice Cream: A perfect place for dates and friends

Let’s talk about Frenzi: It’s a cute, charming little ice cream shop in downtown Gresham, just a short drive from Mt. Hood. I recently went with a friend, and let me tell you, it’s the perfect spot for a chill day or a fun date.

The vibe is super cozy, and the staff is real friendly. They have a wide variety of ice cream flavors that offer either classic or unique picks, so there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re hanging out with a friend or having a little date night, this place has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

You can grab a seat and just enjoy the cute downtown vibes. It’s so close to campus, you don’t even have to worry about venturing far away. You can treat yourself to a scoop, or two or three, and still be able to head back to study later. No need for feelings of stress about not having enough time to study.

A cozy movie night: The perfect Valentine’s idea

Sometimes the best Valentine’s Day ideas are the simplest ones. A few of my co-workers shared such a cute idea that I think you all will love. They said a cozy movie night at home with your favorite snacks, a comfy blanket, and a nice, non-alcoholic drink is a perfect way to spend the day.

Set the mood with some fairy lights (think Christmas lights, because who doesn’t love those?). You can make it a solo event and treat yourself, or invite a friend or partner to join in. It’s a fun way to enjoy the day without any stress, and it’s so easy to set up right in your own living space.

Self-love is key: Treat yourself

You know what’s even more important than Valentine’s Day? Loving yourself. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, this day is about feeling happy and appreciating who you are. If you’re feeling a little extra love for yourself, you can always treat yourself to some ice cream at Frenzi, grab a small gift, or simply spend time doing something that makes you smile.

Remember: Self-care is not selfish – it’s necessary! Take some time to do something that makes you happy, and you’ll be in a great place to share that love with others, too.

Chocolate hunting After Valentine’s Day

Here’s another idea my co-workers shared that I had to pass along: chocolate hunting! After Valentine’s Day, a lot of chocolate is discounted, and you can go out and find your favorite treats for a fraction of the price. At places like Walmart or local shops, you’ll likely find amazing deals on chocolates and candies.

It’s a fun way to treat yourself and stock up on sweet treats for later. Plus, who doesn’t love a good chocolate hunt?

More fun places to visit around Gresham and Portland

These are awesome, fun places you can visit anytime, not just on Valentine’s Day, and you would still be extremely happy.

Japanese Garden in Portland

  • My friend and I visited the Portland Japanese Garden recently and it was absolutely stunning. It’s a peaceful, beautiful spot with gorgeous landscapes, perfect for a relaxing walk or just hanging out in nature. We loved it so much that our other friends saw our social media posts and were inspired to visit. too. It’s a great spot to visit whether you’re going with a partner or just want to enjoy some quiet time with a friend.

Pine Street Market

  • If you’re hungry and want a fun, casual place to eat with friends or a partner, Pine Street Market in downtown Portland is perfect. It’s a food hall with a variety of different vendors serving up delicious meals. You can grab food from different regions, try new flavors, and enjoy it together at the market’s communal seating area.

Salt & Straw Ice Cream

  • Another ice cream spot that’s totally worth mentioning is Salt & Straw. If you’re out and about in Portland, one of their shops is a must-visit for their creative and fun flavors. Whether you’re in the mood for something classic or something more adventurous, you’ll find it here.

OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry)

  • If you want a little adventure, check out OMSI for a fun, educational experience. It’s a great place for friends that I visited with, and for any couple who enjoy interactive exhibits, cool science displays, and an awesome IMAX theater.

Voodoo Doughnut

  • A quirky, iconic Portland spot. Grab a doughnut (or two) with your friends and enjoy some fun vibes at Voodoo Doughnut. It’s a great spot to stop by and make some fun memories together.

A friendly reminder: Make your loved ones feel special

One last thing I want to mention: Effort goes a long way. If you have a partner, remember to put in some effort to make them feel special on Valentine’s Day. I’ve heard too many stories about men and women who forget about Valentine’s Day or need constant reminders. Don’t let the day be a last-minute scramble. It’s always nicer when the love and attention come from both sides. So, whether you’re in a relationship or spending the day with friends or family, make sure to show some love and effort to those who matter most.

Conclusion: Have fun, be happy, and treat yourself!

In sum, whether you’re single or not, this Valentine’s Day, let’s focus on what really matters: enjoying the day! Whether it’s treating yourself at Frenzi, having a cozy movie night, or visiting some fun spots around town, make sure you spend the day with special people or particular treats that make you happy. Most importantly don’t forget to love yourself, because when you do, it makes sharing that love with others all the more beautiful.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
