SHOP CLASSES ONLINE: INCONCEIVABLE?
Web Graphic The idea that a shop class at MHCC could be taken online may seem to be a strange idea, but in the wake of COVID-19 it is now a reality. I have been experiencing this firsthand and, without further ado, here is my experience. When the COVID-19 situation really started to affect things, I was just finishing Winter Term. The only things that were changed at the time were that I had to take one of my finals online, and a spring break trip I had planned to go on was c

STAY-AT-HOME ORDERS MET WITH PROTESTS
It was not that long ago when President Trump himself told a rally of people that the Democratic party’s politicization of the coronavirus was a “Democrat hoax.” Nearly two months later, people are getting stimulus checks to make up for work layoffs and furloughs. Top experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci and the World Health Organization (WHO) predict that the pandemic in its current state will not end anytime soon, and reports are coming in that the virus will come back in stages

WHY “KAREN” IS NOT “THE NEW N-WORD”
At this unique moment in human history, words and phrases are transmitted and evolve at rates unparalleled in any period before. It’s something we all have probably heard a million times, and something we all probably know. But it’s a truth hard to really sink in for us, at times. While technological advancement continues to thrive at an exponential rate, our own experience as a species doesn’t seem to change too much at all, however. History repeats itself, as they always sa

THE SILVER LINING IN THIS TIME OF GRIEF
New York City streets have been astonishingly empty. Web Photo. With the coronavirus come the obvious concerns: public health, local jobs, and the economy as a whole. Globally, this pandemic will wind up with many public issues to be dealt with during the recovery stages. Right now, however, Earth itself is reaping the benefits of less human activity. Since nearly everyone is in quarantine around the world, there are less cars out and about. Many airlines have blacked out fut

TWO FRONTRUNNERS, MULTIPLE ALLEGATIONS
Eli Rankin|The Advocate With Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders now officially out of the running for the Oval Office in November, the lineup for the next phase of fiery election debate is all but guaranteed. Ex-Vice President and very likely Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden has not slowed in his continued rise in popularity among “blue” voters, and President Donald Trump’s determination to win re-election has not been discouraged by “red” voters, either. While they might not be a

AN ESSENTIAL WORKER’S TAKE ON PANDEMIC MADNESS
Web Photo COVID-19 has really put a wrench in the lives of people in 2020. People are losing their jobs, loved ones, and all you hear from the news is the death toll and video of people fighting over toilet paper. In dangerous times like this, you see the worst of people: That is even more true from my perspective, as a worker for a retail store that is considered “essential.” Having to establish limits so people don’t hoard, putting down tape so that people stay 6 feet away

AT-HOME BUCKET LIST

Some of these have been some of my favorite things to fall back on these past couple weeks, and others I only recently learned about. -Listen to music -Practice an instrument, if you have one (examples: piano, guitar, flute) -Write songs -Read -Take some time to decompress (This could

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
Web Graphic Spring is here! (A poem) As a new day begins, and the grass turns green, it’s a time where winter fades away, taking cold winds’ chills, and leaving frostbitten noses warm, with rays sun-kissed bright. Leaves once red, yellow, orange, and brown now shed their winter coat once colored dull, for colors green and bright, flowers bloom bringing bright rainbows of light and hope for a new year and grass begins to pattern the dirt-covered earth. The wind grows warm with

EMERGENCY RESOURCES FOR SAINTS
The Mt. Hood campus is usually bustling with students rushing to class, talking in the Bookstore, having a drink with a friend at the Black Rock café. You’d see teachers welcoming students, and events happening. Instead, the MHCC campus is now a ghost town. The only thing a visitor would find here is an eerie quiet. You might also see some students picking up some textbooks, and upstairs from there, would find the student relief funding staff ready to help. ‘BOOK’ AN APPOINTM

IS ACCESS TO INFORMATION A RIGHT?
Ever since COVID-19 has hit the country, a lot of us have imposed social isolation on ourselves, for fear of catching and spreading the virus. And since Oregon Gov. Kate Brown put heavy restrictions on non-essential, public socializing, we’re essentially confined to our homes. A stay-at-home order is completely new to most of us, unless we often work from home. Still, it’s interesting to be left to our devices – that is, unless we don’t have one. Sure, a lot of people now at

CHINESE VIRUS AND WUHAN VIRUS: WHY SO MANY NAMES?
In times of evolving definitions of racism, COVID-19 has been surrounded in controversy in the arena of politics with the naming conventions of the coronavirus. With people debating about calling the sickness a “Chinese virus” and some calling it a “Wuhan virus,” it has struck a chord, both among those who declare the names racist and those who defend it. While there are cases made for both of these being deemed inappropriate names, there is a precedent of calling diseases na

A GLIMPSE OF SPRING AT MHCC
Bethy Fallgren|The Advocate A few weeks ago, Mt. Hood Community College was booming with beautiful cherry blossoms along with many other delightful flowers, including daffodils and Forget Me Nots. Rainbows of color filled every corner of campus. It was a wonderful sight to see for our final days before Spring Break – and before the college was forced to close its doors due to the unforeseen circumstances of COVID-19. RACISM TOWARDS ASIANS AMIDST CORONA OUTBREAK
Web Graphic Social distancing across the world has led to many people looking to offload their stresses of not being able to leave their homes and performing activities to the same level of freedom they have had not too long ago. Some have attempted to minimize that stress by taking up hobbies such as culinary pursuits, knitting, and posting humorous content online. However, in the midst of people trying to maintain our collective emotional sanity, there has been created a da

WHY WE EXPLORE SPACE
Web Graphic Many ask, what is the point of space exploration? It costs a lot of time and resources, to do just what? Look at stars? Why venture up there, when we have so many problems down here? Why dedicate such a monumental amount of money that could be spent on the poor? It just doesn’t make sense. But space exploration represents so much: the future of the species. We human have spent our history toiling, warring, and innovating to make life on our planet better. But we o

AN HONEST LOOK AT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS
As the MHCC community, we are far past the point of being able to still observe deadly shootings and active shooter situations as abstractly as we may wish to. We have experienced plenty of incidents as a collective, whether that be smaller-scale acts of violence, or larger acts of premeditated mass assaulting. Easily the most urgent and close of these was the Reynolds High School attack by a student in 2014, which resulted in the wounding of a teacher and the killing of a fe

The women’s suffrage movement began in 1841 in Seneca Falls, New York. The convention – originally named the ‘Women’s Rights Convention” but now usually referred to
