‘MEN ON BOATS’
The play “Men on Boats” is showing in the MHCC Studio Theatre at 7 p.m. on May 9-10 and May 16-17. But don’t go expecting to see “men”. Written by Jaclyn Backhaus, this performance retells John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition through the Green and Colorado Rivers into the Grand Canyon – a true(ish) history casting women and nonbinary individuals to portray the male explorers.
Tickets are $5 for MHCC staff & students, $10 for the general public. Doors open at 6:40 p.m.
LEGISLATORS TOWN HALL
Local state legislators Ricki Ruiz (D-Gresham) and Zach Hudson (D-Troutdale), will visit the MHCC Visual Arts Theatre for a student-centered Town Hall from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 16. The pair will address student questions and concerns in the moderated event.
CAL HIGH SCHOOL FASHION SHOW
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, in the College Theatre, a student-run fashion show will spotlight the craftwork of local high schoolers. Students will serve as ushers, stage managers, dressers, designers, and models. This is a cumulating event for the two-year Fashon, Art, and Branding (FAB) program at CAL (Center for Advanced Learning) in central Gresham. FAB teaches basic sewing skills, patterning and design, as well as key skills to help students succeed in their fields. This year’s theme is “Heart in the Machine,” inspired by the 1920s film “Metropolis.” The production explores “What is the role of the artist in humanity?” The goal is to put the heart into the massive “machinery” of the digital era. “The Mediator between the head and the hands must be the heart” – line from “Metropolis” Tickets are $12 for general admission, $8 for high school students and seniors age 65 and over.
